CHAPTER 1: EVAPORATION

EVAPORATION, my favorite chapter indeed. On the first day of lecture, we were exposed to rough idea of evaporation and then we went in detail. I was taught that evaporation mainly consist of two crucial which is dilute and concentrated evaporation respectively. Dilute evaporation here means a solution concentration below than 10% whereas concentrated evaporation means a solution that has concentration more than 10%. This gave me better view of evaporation. Furthermore, apart from the theory of evaporation, our lecturer taught us on the mass balance of the evaporator.The method calculation of was not that complicated therefore I enjoy doing it. Besides, there are also single and multiple effects evaporators are available. Towards the end of the chapter, we were given tutorial questions, basically one per person, dividing us into expert groups. The next class, we were asked to explain those question with solution to the other members of our own home group. This activity named as Jigsaw Activity. Personally I feel this kind of activity is very beneficial and mind challenging. Plus, it promotes team building and bonding. Looking forward for more fun filled activities.  

CHAPTER 2: CRYSTALLISATION

This is another easily understandable chapter I'd say. It basically carried the same concept as evaporation topic before as it includes theory and some simple calculation. Material balance and heat balance plays a vital role in this chapter. In order to strengthen out theory, our lecturer asked us to come up with some questions to ask our friends. It was fun indeed. At the end of this chapter, the jigsaw activity was conducted again with tutorial questions on crystallisation. All this mind blowing activities aided much on enhancing our knowledge on this chapter. 

CHAPTER 3: DRYING & CHAPTER 4: ADSORPTION

​In this chapter called drying, I’ve learned about what is drying all about in detail which involves calculations in solving problems. There are few new terms I’ve learned which humid volume, adiabatic saturation temperature, equilibrium moisture content, constant rate and falling rate. Apart from this I also able to differentiate the different types of drying region as well as predict the drying rate and drying time using empirical correlation. In chapter 4 which is adsorption, I’ve studied about basic principles of adsorption and factors influencing its separation efficiency and how determine the type of adsorption equilibrium for a given adsorption process. Furthermore, now I can perform calculation related to batch adsorption process and calculation related to fixed bed adsorption process. I was taught about the concept of mass transfer zone and how it affects the operation of a fixed bed adsorption column. Throughout my learning process, I really enjoyed imparting new knowledge despite of it being rough journey. Sometimes, I don’t really understand the lecture, nonetheless, I’ve always seeked the lecturer’s guidance for further clarification. To be precise, I have to work hard so that I wouldn’t face any difficulties in the near future regarding this topic.

CHAPTER 5: MEMBRANE SEPARATION &
CHAPTER 6: MECHANICAL-PHYSICAL SEPARATION 

In chapter 5 which is membrane separation I was taught on the theories involved in membrane separation process as well as the factors affecting the membrane separation efficiency. Moreover, I learned about different types of membrane module and its operation, solving problems related to liquid permeation. Not limiting ourselves to liquid permeation, I also gained knowledge on how to solve problems related to gas permeation, in particular the complete mixing. Moving on to chapter 6, mechanical-physical separation. Although this chapter is not coming out for finals yet we were taught about it as its very useful for third year.  This includes basic equipment for filtration and centrifugation. Throughout the learning process for this two chapters, I found things to be easy and simple as its not that complex. I’ve done massive research on the equipments for better understanding.
