Chapter 1: Evaporation & Chapter 2: Crystallization

Chapter 1: Evaporation & Chapter 2: Crystallization

In this chapter, I have learned some basic theory of evaporation. Mainly the processing factors. There are six processing factors in total and each of them affects the evaporation process in their own ways. Then I have learned the two types of evaporators and how to calculate the mass balance and energy balance for both of them. There are two different types of solutions which are dilute and concentrated. Both type have respective ways of calculating the energy balance. The concentrated solution calculation uses charts and it was confusing at first. But I've managed to cope with it after doing a few problems related to it. The jigsaw activity for this chapter really helped me to analyze the different types of questions and how to answer them.

In chapter 2, the concept is similar to chapter 1. We start of learning the theory of crystallization and to make us understand it more, Dr Aini made us make our own question to ask our neighbors. Through this activity, it strengthen my theory. Then, I have learned to calculate the mass and energy balance for crystallizers. And we only learned on type of crysatallizer. The calculations are simpler than evaporation. But, during the jigsaw activity, the questions given only covers up the mass balances of components. I hope I can find questions for energy balance to improve my calculations.

Chapter 3: Drying & Chapter 4: Adsorption

In chapter 3, I have learned the differences between drying and evaporation. Along with that, I discovered that there are two types of drying which is drying for air and drying for wet solids. For air, I have learned a few new terms like humid volume and adiabatic saturation temperature. Besides that, I have also learned how to use the humidity chart. Furthermore, I have also know how to calculate the drying rate for constant rate region and falling rate region. I just need to do more practice on this chapter because I missed the tutorial session due to sickness.

In chapter 4, I now am clear on the differences od Adsorption and ABsorption. There were a lot of theories in this chapter, for example the types of adsorption and the function of desorption. Besides that, we also listed the criteria for adsorbent selection. Through this chapter, I have learn the 4 adsorption isotherms which are linear, langmuir, BET and Freundlich. Based on these isotherms, I must apply them to solve the problems on batch adsorption for this chapter. Moreover, I have learned the fixed bed adsorption where I am exposed to the Mass Transfer zone (MTZ). This leads to the breakthrough curve and a few calculations

Chapter 5: Membrane & Chapter 6: Physical Separator

For the chapter about membrane, I have learned the permeance of liquid and gas.Besides that, This chapter was divided into three sub topic which is gas permeation, liquid permeation process and complete mixing model. For each of this sub-topic, there were several equations tat need to be applied in order to solve the problems. To be compared with other chapter, to be honest, this is the least interesting for me because i love the chapters before more than this one and i find it hard to understand at first. I chapter 6, i have learned about several types of physical separators. And i am looking forward to apply this knowledge in the upcoming Chemical Engineering Lab 2
